LIBERTY COUNTY, TX — In the midst of catastrophic flooding that has submerged large parts of southeastern Texas, one man emerged not just as a public figure, but as a local hero.
Tyrus, the FOX News commentator and former professional wrestling champion, risked his life this weekend to rescue ten children trapped inside a rapidly flooding home — using only a canoe, a rope, and sheer determination.
The dramatic rescue took place Sunday evening in a rural neighborhood outside the town of Daisetta, where floodwaters had risen to over five feet in under two hours. Emergency responders were overwhelmed, and many homes became inaccessible.
A Desperate Call for Help
Local volunteer responders say they received a panicked call from a teacher who had taken in a group of children during a school evacuation. The power was out, the water was rising fast, and no help had arrived.
Tyrus, already in the area delivering flood relief supplies, heard about the situation from a local church coordinator and didn’t hesitate.
“We didn’t have time to wait,” Tyrus said. “The roads were gone. The boats were tied up elsewhere. So we grabbed a canoe, tied a rope to a truck, and I went in.”
Wearing a life vest and rain gear, he paddled through chest-high water against strong currents, navigating around floating debris, downed power lines, and partially submerged vehicles.
Ten Children, One Canoe, and a Race Against Time
Inside the house, ten children aged 4 to 13 were trapped upstairs. With rising waters lapping at the baseboards, Tyrus and a local volunteer named Marcus Hall ferried the children out three at a time — with one final trip for the teacher.
It took four trips in total. By the time the last group was evacuated, the lower floor was completely underwater.
“We had to lift one boy who couldn’t swim. He was shaking like a leaf,” Tyrus recalled. “I just told him, ‘I’ve got you, buddy. You’re safe now.’”
“The kids are the future,” he added quietly. “I had to protect them. That’s it.”
Community in Awe
News of the rescue spread quickly through the local area — first via text, then social media. Within hours, photos emerged of Tyrus, soaked to the bone, carrying children wrapped in towels toward higher ground.
“I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Liberty County Deputy Carla Ramirez. “He didn’t make it about himself. He just acted. It was pure instinct, pure courage.”
Local resident James Archer, whose daughter was among the rescued children, called Tyrus “a godsend.”
“He didn’t ask questions. He didn’t wait for cameras. He just showed up and saved them.”
Not the First Time Tyrus Has Stepped Up
While best known for his outspoken political commentary and wrestling persona, Tyrus has a long history of humanitarian work, especially in disaster-struck communities.
He arrived in Texas earlier this week with a $50,000 donation for flood victims and has been volunteering on the ground — delivering supplies, helping clear debris, and now, saving lives.
“I don’t care about your politics,” he told a group gathered outside a community center after the rescue. “If you’re hurting, I’ll help. Simple as that.”
A Message That Resonates
Tyrus declined national media interviews immediately after the incident, saying the focus should remain on the families. However, in a brief written statement, he said:
“In times like these, your title doesn’t matter. Your actions do.”
He encouraged others to donate or volunteer, adding, “This flood hit hard — but we hit back harder, together.”
The Children Are Safe
All ten children have been reunited with their families and are reportedly in good health. Medical staff at the Liberty County Civic Shelter confirmed that none suffered hypothermia or injuries.
Their teacher, Dana Ellison, said it was “the most terrifying 90 minutes” of her life — and the most inspiring.
“He came through the storm like something out of a movie. I’ll never forget it.”
