Eamonn Holmes has revealed that he has a sentimental side and admitted that he is a “sucker” for romantic films

Former This Morning presenter Eamonn Holmes disclosed his soft spot for cinema, naming the 1995 film The American President as his top pick.

“It’s a beautiful love story,” he declared, recommending that it’s essential viewing for all. Eamonn, who has been married twice, shared that merely contemplating the movie nearly moves him to tears as he fought back sobs.

The narrative of The American President revolves around a widowed US leader, played by Michael Douglas, who begins courting an environmental lobbyist amidst election campaign pressures.

During an episode of his podcast, Things We Like With Eamonn and Paul, Eamonn pointed out a poignant moment from the picture: “Michael Douglas is pushed to the brink. He’s criticised for dating this woman… it makes me cry even thinking about it, and he gives the most beautiful speech. If I could give one speech of my life it would be like that.”

Penned by Aaron Sorkin of The West Wing fame, the script features Sorkin’s characteristic snappy exchanges – elements of which have even crossed over into actual political speeches, as seen when Australian politician Anthony Albanese incorporated some lines into his 2012 address.

However, for Eamonn, it’s the heart-stirring tale of affection that strikes the deepest chord. Emotionally, he reflected on a memorable quote from the movie: “He’s loved two women in his life and one died. But his punchline is ‘My name is Andrew Shepherd and I am the president,’” reports Devon Live.
“That’s the moment when I want to stand up and cheer,” Eamonn said, adding: “I find it’s the most uplifting, beautiful love story of a film.”

Taking a moment to recover, he opened up about his romantic side, revealing: “I’m a sucker for sentimentality, I really am.”

Eamonn has recently found love again with 43-year-old Katie Alexander after parting ways with Loose Women’s Ruth Langsford. Eamonn and Ruth, 65, were married from 2010 to 2024.

Katie, who is a marriage counsellor, journeyed with Eamonn to London for the TRIC awards but chose not to attend the ceremony.

On her choice to skip the event, Katie took to social media to share: “Was going to The TRIC Awards, but I’d rather protect my Mental Health and Inner Peace than be subjected to more online hate from people who don’t know me.”

There was reportedly some pushback among the TRIC audience as 65-year-old Eamonn – currently using a wheelchair as a result of a dislocated pelvis – climbed a ramp to accept an award on behalf of the GB News Breakfast team.

A source conveyed to the Daily Mail the mixed feelings amongst attendees: “After it was announced that GB News Breakfast had won, there were a few boos around the room. Due to his wheelchair, Eamonn needed a ramp to get up on the stage.”

“He gave a moving speech about the work of colleague Charli Peters, who had earlier won News Presenter for his work on exposing grooming gangs in Britain.

“It was a nice moment seeing Eamonn pay tribute to a fellow news presenter, but it seemed someone in the audience didn’t agree.”
