The Scottish presenter didn’t hesitate when reaching for the back of her head to show viewers
Lorraine Kelly fans lauded the presenter after she revealed her natural look by removing a hair extension during today’s programme (June 26). In a segment with celebrity stylist Richard Ward, the Scottish presenter and mother-of-one disclosed that she wears the extension “for telly”, shedding light on a widespread health issue affecting many women.
As she reached behind her head, Lorraine told her audience: “Can I just say, every morning when I’m on the telly, I have these wee things.” She then detached a hair extension and twirled it above her head, adding with a touch of fun: “Look, da, da, da, da,”.
Her guest, stylist Richard Ward, replied in delight: “Oh my god, that’s fantastic,” to which Lorraine responded: “Aren’t they great?! I don’t do it for real, true life, but I do it for telly. Helen puts them in in the morning,” she explained. The moment can be viewed in the clip below.

Continuing the lighthearted mood, Lorraine stretched the hair piece across her face and under her chin. “Look, ta da!” She said. “It can double as a beard.” Richard commented: “That is amazing.” Lorraine added: “It just gives you a little bit more round there.”
This afternoon, Lorraine’s official Instagram account shared a snippet from the show’s segment, reports Gloucestershire Live. The post was captioned: “After celebrity stylist Richard Ward gave one viewer a transformation to help with thinning hair on today’s show, Lorraine makes a confession about her own hair!”
In the comment section, one admirer by the name of Jai replied: “I just love you.” Belle added: “Love Lorraine!” Deb shared her affection, writing: “I just love Lorraine, she is so real and down to earth.”
Rachael Woolston suggested: “You should do a little segment on this as I know lots of women suffer from thinning hair in midlife.” Jud agreed: “Yes, do a feature on hair pieces, wigs, supplements, etc!!”
When the same footage was uploaded on Facebook, further plaudits were awarded to Lorraine for her openness. One viewer expressed: “I love you and your honesty, you make us all feel real.” Another said: “Well done, Lorraine.”
This heart-to-heart about Lorraine’s own hair came shortly after Richard Ward transformed a viewer’s appearance, focusing on thinning hair solutions. Yesterday, the renowned stylist told his followers he’d be gracing the ITV show with his presence.
His announcement was as follows: “[I’m] back on your screens with a transformation for someone struggling with thinning hair due to ageing, menopause, long COVID, or illness.” He continued: “If you’ve been holding onto long hair that’s lost its fullness, don’t miss this! Watch as [I] create a gorgeous, confidence-boosting summer restyle, proof that with the right cut and care, thinning hair can still look incredible.”
Hair thinning is a common issue among women, particularly as around half of those aged 70 and above experience female-pattern baldness. It’s also completely normal for women to experience temporary hair loss post-pregnancy. Many women notice their hair thinning during perimenopause and menopause.

The NHS explains: “There are lots of different types of hair loss. It can take the form of ‘thinning’ or involve a total loss of hair. It can be gradual or sudden; it can affect the old and the young. Hair loss can be genetic, or as a result of extreme stress, a medical condition or treatment. Hair loss is a well-known side effect of chemotherapy. It’s also common for women to lose more hair than usual up to 3 months after they’ve given birth.”
Common causes of thinning hair in women:
Female pattern hair loss (FPHL): This is the most prevalent form of hair loss among women and is often passed down through families. It usually results in a slow thinning of hair, especially on the crown and sides of the head.
Hormonal changes: Changes in hormones, such as those that occur during pregnancy, childbirth, or menopause, can interfere with the hair growth cycle, resulting in temporary or even permanent hair thinning.
Medical conditions: Certain health issues, like thyroid problems, autoimmune disorders, and anaemia, can lead to hair loss as a symptom.
Medications: Some drugs, including specific blood pressure medications, gout treatments, and high doses of vitamin A, may cause hair loss as a side effect.
Nutritional deficiencies: Lack of iron, vitamins A, B, D & E, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids can affect hair health and lead to thinning.
Stress: Both physical and emotional stress can trigger a condition known as telogen effluvium, where hair follicles go into a resting phase and may shed prematurely.
Hairstyles and hair care: Tight hairstyles (like braids or ponytails), excessive heat styling, and harsh hair products can harm hair follicles, resulting in breakage and thinning.
The NHS says: “Hair loss can be particularly difficult for women. But there are ways to cope.” If you’re experiencing sudden or severe hair loss, it’s crucial to see a doctor or dermatologist to determine the cause and discuss possible treatments. Find out more about hair loss.
Choices regarding treatment include being prescribed medications like topical minoxidil (Rogaine), which is a popular option for treating female pattern hair loss, and other medications might be suggested based on the underlying cause. In certain situations, hair transplant surgery could be a viable choice for enhancing hair density.
Maintaining a balanced diet, managing stress levels, and steering clear of harsh hair treatments can contribute to better hair health. Some supplements such as biotin, iron, and vitamin D might be advised to tackle nutritional deficiencies.
