This post follows Bret’s recent candid discussion about their 18-year-old son, Paul, who was born with five congenital heart defects.

The host of Special Report shared the emotional journey with PEOPLE, revealing, “his heart was essentially pumping the wrong way, and we didn’t know before birth.”

Paul underwent his first open-heart procedure shortly after his birth on June 29, 2007, followed by additional surgeries at three months old, 10 months old, 6 years old, and 13 years old.

After his latest operation, Paul’s family, including Bret, his mom Amy, and his 15-year-old brother Daniel, hoped they would be free from the anxiety-ridden hospital stays until he reached his 20s.

Tragically, this wasn’t meant to be, as Paul developed a routine cold in 2024, prompting Amy to take him to see a physician as a safety measure. Following a chest X-ray and subsequent MRI scan, the family was confronted with yet another frightening medical revelation.

“The MRI comes back, and they sit me down and say, ‘This is a really big deal. This is an aneurysm the size of a golf ball that has formed off of his heart,’ ” Bret recounted to the publication at the time.

“And they didn’t know whether it might burst, but if it did, it might have been fatal in a matter of minutes,” he continued.

Consequently, another major cardiac procedure was required, proving to be far more nerve-wracking than previous operations. “It was exponentially more stressful and emergent, and we weren’t prepared for it,” Bret confessed.

The operation proceeded successfully, and twelve months on, Paul is recovering well while looking forward to what lies ahead. Paul just marked his 18th birthday milestone, with Amy posting a heartfelt message accompanied by an adorable photo of the pair together.

“Happy 18th Birthday Paul! I’m so proud of the person you’ve become and so grateful for you every day,” she beamed.

“Bottom line is, we want him to be a normal kid,” Bret expressed regarding his and Amy’s aspirations for Paul moving forward. “Seventeen years ago, we would be really, really happy to be right here – after that first surgery as a baby,” he concluded.
